Z is a junior at a university in New York. He is a dual citizen and is a first-generation American. He identifies as male, Latino, and is openly gay. Z is a part of the working class. As a white, upper-middle-class, straight female, Z’s story was very eye-opening. Listening to him describe the struggles he and his family have gone through made me rethink the American Dream and how easy it is to achieve it. This interview disrupted my American Dream by pushing me to view this dream through the lens of a dual-citizen, and opened my eyes to struggles I haven’t faced due to my identity. Many Americans who look a like myself don’t truly understand the impact certain identities have on the lives and dreams of those who hold these identities, which is why interviews like these are so necessary in disrupting the American Dream.
