The full video below provides more on the story and my artifact comparison of the way a private school markets itself versus how my interview subject would market it in an ideal world.

Additional Information:

Growing up, Z grew up in an affluent community. Her dad, her family members, and the people she surrounded herself with shaped her American Dream to be based on the principles of success. I had a similar upbringing and have defined my American Dream around words such as success, independence, and determination. After speaking with Z, I believe a lot of my American Dream has been shaped by my experiences in private school. It is safe to say that not everyone has equal access to private education in America – and that can possibly have an impact on people’s American Dream. In order to have a better private school system where everyone can have more of an equal shot of succeeding, Allison’s ideal private school would:

– Foster an inclusive environment

– Promote exposure to different backgrounds – not just in terms of race, but also socioeconomic class and other aspects of identity

– Offer a more applied and practical curriculum so people can be better prepared for the workforce and society, through basic courses on how to do practical things in life such as filing taxes and picking insurance plans

– Offer sliding scale tuition, which determines the cost of a private school based on a family’s income and is not a flat rate for everyone.
